the rescue puppy that I NEEDED...

Once upon a time (2018) in a kingdom far away (South East London) I rescued a beautiful brindle lurcher from the castle where she lived (Battersea Dogs and Cats Home).

Gosseta was an 18 month old puppy. That's right - at 18 months she was technically a teenager, but she had been found as a stray and showed many puppy-like behaviours. Gosseta wasn't toiled trained - as I learnt after sleepily stepping into my damp slippers in the morning, she wasn't crate trained -as I learnt after she ate the fabric opening to her crate, she had no social skills - which I was told off for after she playfully nipped another doggy on the bottom trying to get him to play with her, and she had the most crippling separation anxiety I've ever seen in a dog.

I had waited over 30 years to be in a position to responsibly adopt a dog. Far from feeling prepared, I felt horribly out of my depth. I also struggled to know who to trust for advice and guidance - everybody seemed to have strong opinions about the "right" thing to do.

This is when I began to educate myself on puppy training and behaviour. I sought out the best resources, devouring books and chewing through the pages of behavioural journals.

At the time, I was working full-time as a Spanish translator in the financial services industry - I felt like Cinderella when her stepsisters were living their best lives at the ball. I didn't want to be in an office, I wanted to be at home with Gosseta! But before I got a chance at my own fairytale ending, Gosseta was sadly whisked off into the sunset by the person I adopted her with.

I was utterly heartbroken. I filled my flat with photographs and memories of Gosseta and the void only deepened. She was everywhere, yet nowhere near.

Gosseta was never just a dog. She was a wake-up call. A catalyst for life-changing decisions. Because of Gosseta, I decided to swap office life for park life. I had learnt so much from her, so I chose to help other people like me. I started by volunteering as a dog walker and sitter, and loved it so much that I started training to become a professional dog walker and puppy trainer.

Along the way I have worked as a veterinary receptionist for The Neighbourhood Vet, Ribble Vets and Vets Now. I was honoured to then be offered a role as an Animal Care Assistant with Vets Now - a role I gladly accepted, building up a portfolio of unique puppy care skills.

Now I dedicate myself fully to MeeraPuppins.  Always in memory of the time I shared with Gosseta. Without her, I would still be day-dreaming of doing something that I truly love, just as much as I loved her.

the RESCUE GREYHOUND that needed me...

Theo is a story I never thought I would be telling. I can only describe meeting him in April 2020 as falling down a rabbit hole. Except I was very much awake, and utterly terrified as the world teetered on the edge of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Our unique story has attracted the attention of several media outlets.
We have been interviewed in Femail, Metro and Women's Own magazine.

In all honesty, Theo was even more of a basket case than Gosseta. He will forgive me for saying that because he had been left in rescue kennels for over 6 months with no interest in him. Theo's endless quirks prompted me to delve even deeper into the weird and wonderful world of dog behaviour.

I am close to completing my Level 2 Diploma in Professional Dog Walking.
I have successfully completed the Perfect Puppy course with the Institute of Modern Dog Trainers.
